Hometown: Pemberville, Ohio
Role: Executive Director, Juvenile Justice Coalition
Favorite Actor: Idris Elba
Sitting in the cozy JJC office and eating fried rice, Erin Davies turns the stereotype of a policy advocate on its head. As the Executive Director of the Juvenile Justice Coalition, Erin often finds herself head-first in legislative policy and interested party meetings, but she is far from the “jaded policy advocate” narrative. With a bright personality and spirited laughter, Erin shares her long history with the path of juvenile justice.
Growing up in Pemberville, Ohio, Erin was sheltered from the diverse world. “I would say that the vast majority of my town was white, Protestant folks,” she recounts. After leaving her town, however, she quickly discovered the injustices that plagued our society. During college, Erin worked with a criminal reform organization, where she was introduced to the maltreatment within the justice system. With her newfound knowledge and passion, the young advocate began her fight for justice.
Being an advocate is no easy task, but Erin enjoys every step of the way. Being proximate to those directly affected by policy is paramount for Erin; because of this, Erin often aims to amplify and enhance the voices that are usually unheard. When asked what she thought about what being a youth advocate meant, Erin paused. Looking around the room, she replied thoughtfully, “It’s making space at the table for young people.”
