At just 18 years old, Bahirah and Nafisah Malik are showing the world that anyone can join the fight against injustice. The twins have been advocating for social justice since they were 14 years old, but their fight has only just begun.
Bahirah and Nafisah first became interested in activism during the summer of 2014 after Freedom Summer in Mississippi. They began organizing after hearing the numerous reports of police brutality cases, the most rattling being the death of Tyre King. The twins knew of the 13-year-old from their elementary school years, and his murder called them to action.
As youth advocates, Bahirah and Nafisah work with organizations such as Voices of the Unheard and the People’s Justice Project. In these organizations, the teens organize youth in Columbus to talk about deep-rooted issues and calls for change. They aim to build community in order to move the community through advocacy, mobilization, and awareness.
Bahirah and Nafisah are leaders among the crowd bringing with them their passion and commitment to change. Through the power of advocacy with their distinct young voices, these twins are changing the face of justice.
